Which Level of Body Armor is Right for You?
May 18, 2017What Professions Can Benefit from Body Armor?
July 6, 2017Protective body armor can stop a bullet, and therefore, save a life. Although they are provided to law enforcement officers, all agencies do not require that they always wear their bulletproof vests. They usually leave the decision to the individual officers. So, to wear or not to wear? That is the question. And the answer is simple: a resounding yes.
Although they are imperfect, wearing a bulletproof vest still significantly increases the wearer’s defense, therefore greatly increasing the chance of surviving a gunshot and decreasing the severity of the injury one might sustain. Body armor obviously doesn’t cover 100% of the wearer’s body, but it covers the wearer’s chest and torso, which is the biggest target for a shooter, making it the easiest to hit.
As a police officer, you never know what your day is going to look like. No one can predict the future but a day in the life of a police officer can be particularly unpredictable. A dangerous situation can arise from out of nowhere, especially in this day and age. The simplest of decisions is a matter of life and death.
For example, you might think that you don’t need auto insurance coverage. But then the day comes when you get into an accident, leaving you in major trouble without it. This is another situation that you can’t foresee coming which is why it’s better to be safe than sorry.
Although not a majority of them, but many law enforcement officers that were killed in action were not wearing their body armor at the time of death. One of the reasons officers cite most often for not opting to put on their armor is discomfort, mainly in warmer climates. The equipment isn’t lightweight, which is certainly one of the downsides to wearing them but if they’re to be expected to stop a bullet, they’re going to be on the heavy side.
Sweat, heat, discomfort, and inconvenience should not be good enough reasons to avoid sporting a bulletproof vest. The only time you’ll regret avoiding it is the one time that you truly needed it, and you may not even be around to regret it.
