5 Things to Consider When Purchasing Your Vest
July 1, 2016So What Are the NIJ Standards?
November 22, 2016Police and firefighters respond to emergencies that threaten human life every day. These emergency responders wear protective gear to do their jobs out in the field, yet there is at least one type of emergency responder that rarely protects themselves with more than latex gloves, Emergency Medical Services workers.
EMS is on call, saving lives from fatal injuries. While not every situation an EMS worker faces is life-threatening for either party, they are tasked with attending to and transporting individuals regardless of what situation they are in.
Just like police and firefighters, EMS is a dangerous job. In 2014, more than 21,000 EMS workers were either injured or became severely ill. That same year, 2,600 EMS workers were injured or killed due to violence on the job, in many cases, at the hands of the same people they were rescuing. The conditions of their job doesn’t stop emergency responders from doing it, but it also doesn’t mean that they should be expected to perform their duties without being well-protected from present dangers in the field.
What Do We Suggest?
Across the globe, after stories of slain EMS workers in Europe, EMS began to request that they be given some form of protection while performing their duties. We think bulletproof vests are likely the best option to protect these responders from the majority of dangers that they might encounter.
Bulletproof inserts on EMS workers not only helps to protect them from gunfire, a real danger upon their arrival, it sends a very clear message to those that they are trying to rescue. When emergency responders feel better protected, they are more likely to perform their duties to their fullest extent.
Another Consideration
Police officers are injured in car crashes every day, most survive or can walk away with little recovery time. Bullet-resistant vests and plates are credited with saving police officer’s lives, not only when stopping gunfire, but also when protecting their torso from damage in a car crash.
In 2013, 2,100 EMS workers were injured or killed as a result of crashes. Proper protection from bullets might also save EMS from another significant concern.
